BAGS

Some handbags by Balenciaga that make me happy.

ERWIN OLAF

Erwin Olaf is a northern photographer of whom I have an enmormous appreciation and a taste for his world of perfection (?) .  The colours in his work are wonderfully mute and at the same time very vivid through their harmony. Definately preferring this version of 60s/50s style.

LA FIAC 2009 AU GRAND PALAIS

This year's FIAC really didn't get me off, as FIAC usually doesn't, but there are of course always a couple pieces worth revision. As per-usual I basically ended squatting the "bar" section with a couple friends tossing back "Lisa" white wine. But anyway, here are those pieces worth revising!

VANGELIS - OPERA SAUVAGE - RÊVE

A song that I really love by Vangelis. Very new age style of music - this particular artist really gets me though. He is also responsible for the Blade Runner soundtrack as well as many other films. This was a song in the original soundtrack for a French TV series in the 80s, and the cd is called "Opéra Sauvage". Love this sound... and I think there is definitely something to do with it in terms of modern electronic music. A vous de jouer!

LA MAUVAISE VIE - FREDERIC MITTERRAND

There has been A LOT of talk going on about the minister of culture in France (Frédéric Mitterrand) and how in his new book, "La Mauvaise Vie" (or, "The bad life") he describes how he has had relationships with "boys" in something like a brothel, in Patpong Thailand. After hearing people simply talk about the subject I decided it would be necessary to look into the issue further before making any presumptions on a man that I consider entirely respectable. So, I went to Le Monde to find a three page excerpt from the book that had me on the edge of my seat! He explains, and rather beautifully I must add, the whole scene about his selection of a 'boy' and following him back to a hotel room lined with mirrors. He explains how he feels that, the idea of not being responsable to anyone and not having to give answers to anyone, makes this experience something unescapable for him. He mentions how the idea of a love slave (!) excites him more than anything and that, for him, it is a necessary part of his life. The main part in this passage focuses on this one boy that he met named "Bird" and how he fell in love with Bird for that one night. Later he delicately declares his wishes that nobody will ever hurt this boy (aged around 20 years old) and that he will never be ruined by the world.

I honestly do not know what to think. However, I do profoundly respect his ability, as an active minister, to speak the truth. Perhaps I am giving him too much artistic liberty, but somehow after reading that passage I did not feel disgusted or shocked at all, as I am sure many people could be. It was almost depressing, or something that one could feel sorry for the man having to keep up with his proffessional life and keep low his private life. In any case, I find it somewhat absurde that people would like to remove him from his position after such a thing, and rather I think it might be the kind of mental healing from writing this book that could bring about a better, more rounded person.

And there is my opinion.

CAROLE BOUQUET

If you do not know of Carole Bouquet you might remember her as a bond girl in the film "For Your Eyes Only" - She is a French Actress and her beauty and style (especially from the era that this film was made) is inspiring.

PHENOMENA

This is the opening scene in another Dario Argento film that I am in love with called "Phenomena". Again, not for the light hearted. I find his opening scenes to be very well done on the artistic scale, always leaving many questions and much anxiety.

STRANGE WORLDS

Dear Audience

Upon a recent visit to London I walked into an art gallery/school located somewhere around Kennington Park. I was happy to discover a couple of new artists (or I assume two students who have recently graduated and were therefore representing their work) who had me interested.

The first that I would like to address is named Alex Fox. Alex Fox took the time to put together a multi-technique documentary on something that, to be quite honest, I didn't know exsisted. There are, as a matter of fact, several abandoned radio towers out there in the atlantic ocean! He managed to visit them, photograph them, film them, draw them, and sculpt them to leave us asking questions. The expo was a pleasure to see because I am someone to be easily amused when I see such things that I couldn't even imagine. You can visit his site to see more on this here.

The second is named Dan McDermott. Perhaps his style of painting is something we see more and more of today however I found it to be light and dark at the same time, and decided it was worth further investigation. In any case the pieces are all visually appealing (which contrairy to many general opinions, I find that to be absolutely necessary in artwork) and they all have a certain feeling of nostalgia around them (if not only because the Factory seems to be a reoccuring vision throughout his work). You can equally find his work here.

Et voilà.

FREDERIC SANCHEZ FOR RUE DE MAIL

As a person who ris constantly trying to hear new sounds, I was pleasantly surprised to hear this. Last week I was invited by my lovely friend Julie to go see the Rue de Mail show. I was not very impressed with the clothes, however I found the sound wonderful. Especially the piece that starts around 2:40. I later asked Julie who was making this and she explained to me that it is Frederic Sanchez, as many of you know, is making music or "installation" pieces for many shows. Leaving you with that for now. Tchuss.

MIU MIU SPRING 2010

Many of the recent shows in Paris Fashion Week disturbed me, especially Nina Ricci now that Toscanes is gone, however throughout the rubbish I was happy (as I usllay am with this one) to find that Miu Miu had a lovely and strange collection. I invite you to check them out at their site. Here are some shots from style.com.

DAVID HOCKNEY : GENIUS

American Collectors, David Hockney

The colors that David Hockney utilized throughout his series of "collectors" portraits still astound me in their cold yet extremely refined mixing. wonderful.

FILM INSPIRATION : STENDHAL SYNDROME, DARIO ARGENTO

Dear readers,

I simply had to put this film into my blog, as it is one of my favorites. Starring the daughter (Asia Argento) of Mr. Argento and taking place in Rome it is a film in which we see three different characters finally portrayed by the same woman. It is of course a brutal film which treats the subject of rape and, in my opinion, the psychological deveopment of a victim. Possesion, revenge, pain, love, assumption, and finally becoming the enemy. Of course, it is also a highly stylized film in which Asia Argento is portrayed beautifully, perhaps even the best out of all her cinema performances. Here are a couple photos to leave you thinking.

Bisous
